Oil prices have fallen more than 6 percent in heavy trading and have tumbled US crude to its lowest level in more than a year, hit by a wider Wall Street crash fueled by worries about slowing global economic growth.
 
US WTI futures contract fell $ 3.77, or 6.6 percent, to $ 53.43 a barrel. The contract fell as much as 7.7 percent during the session to $ 52.77 a barrel, its lowest level since October 2017.
 
More than 946,000 contracts were dealt with.
 
Brent crude futures fell $ 4.26, or 6.4 percent, to $ 62.53 a barrel. Crude fell 7.6 percent to $ 61.71 a barrel, the lowest level since December 2017
