China and the United States have resumed high-level trade talks, Gao Feng, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce, said during a weekly press briefing in Beijing on Thursday, but gave no further details.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump said after a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that he believed Washington would conclude a trade deal with Beijing but was ready to impose more duties on Chinese goods if there was no progress.

The two countries resumed talks after contact after a three-month stalemate in which relations deteriorated, with the United States accusing China of interfering in domestic politics and seeking to undermine Trump.
