Russian Transport Minister Yevgeny Dietrich said his ministry is currently considering organizing a flight connecting the Crimean peninsula with Damascus.

The Russian news agency TASS news agency quoted Dietrich as saying today that a flight involving the city of Simferopol, the capital of the Crimean republic of Russia, is being studied in Damascus.

The President of the Crimea Sergei Axyonov sent a letter to Dietrich asking him to support the organization of air traffic between the two cities.

In April, Syria and the Russian Republic of Crimea signed an agreement on economic and trade cooperation and a memorandum of intent on cooperation between Syrian and Russian businessmen during the Fourth Yalta Economic Forum.

The Crimea returned to Russian sovereignty in 2014 on the basis of a popular referendum in which 99 percent of its people supported the return to their motherland
